Program Description: This is the second program in a three-part series complementing the current Museum exhibits: "Dressing the Abbey: The Costumes of Downton Abbey," and Campbell House's "Spinning a Yarn."
Curators Laura Thayer and Marsha Rooney ask you to imagine a time before stores were filled with “ready-made” clothing. During this period in time a fashion-conscious woman might sew her own clothing,
contract local dressmakers, or travel to New York City
for fittings at Eugenie or Hickson salons. Illustrated by ensembles
from the MAC Collection, learn about several dressmakers
or “modistes” of the day, who melded current fabrics
and styles to their clients’ personal tastes.
