In anticipation of America's 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the MAC invites you to a special screening of From Sea to Shining Sea: Katharine Lee Bates and the Story of America the Beautiful. This film explores the rich life of poet, professor, and social reformer Katharine Lee Bates, the poet behind "America the Beautiful." Bates was inspired by the sweeping vistas of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains and penned lyrics that reflect both a love of her country and a desire for reform, while honoring generations of Americans striving toward its most compelling ideals.
Enjoy the 40-minute film and then stay for a discussion and Q&A session with the director and writer John de Graaf. John is an award-winning documentary director and writer with nearly 50 years of experience, best known for his work in public television, including many films aired on PBS. His documentaries have earned regional, national, and international recognition for their storytelling and impact. He is also the namesake of the John de Graaf Environmental Filmmaking Award, which is presented annually at the Wild and Scenic Film Festival in California.
