About the Program: Author Melanie Holmes joins us virtually from the Chicago area for this special lecture on the eve of the 44th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens.
People have known how Dr. David Johnston died in the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, but not about the preceding 30 years. At the urging of his remaining family member, Melanie Holmes brought out a book informed by those who knew him - and the mountain - best. Because of the input/peer review by preeminent geologists, the book is highly recommended by the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
In this online lecture by Holmes, she will weave together the stories of many heroes in this book, including police who enforced road closures and Search & Rescue who plucked survivors out of hot muddy lahars. Fifty-seven people died as a result of the eruption; this book honors them all while teaching the science.
